Driver killed and others injured in accident involving President Akufo-Addo’s convoy

On Sunday, May 19, 2024, a fatal accident involving multiple vehicles from President Akufo-Addo’s convoy happened on the Accra-Kumasi Highway segment at Bunso-Akyem Asafo. 

The President had been present at a number of occasions, and the convoy was returning from Kumasi. One of the drivers, Mr. Kwesi Atta, lost his life in the tragic tragedy. 

A number of police officers and members of the President’s security detail who were under close protection also suffered various degrees of injuries.

After receiving basic care at the Suhum Government Hospital, the injured officers are presently being transported to the University of Ghana Medical Centre to undergo additional care and observation. 

Many of the convoy’s cars sustained serious damage as a result of the collision. President Akufo-Addo, however, was unharmed since he had taken a military plane to Accra. 

According to Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the Office of the President, “our thoughts and prayers are with the relatives of the dead and we hope a rapid recovery to the injured policemen.” He said that as they continue to evaluate the situation, more information would be shared.

 According to reports, the collision happened when a KIA Rhino truck crossed the convoy.
