FIFA Confirms 10-Month Ban for Sandro Tonali Over Illegal Gambling

3 Min Read

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is facing a 10-month ban for illegal gambling, with FIFA extending the suspension worldwide.

The ban was announced after Tonali was named in an investigation by Italian prosecutors and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) regarding allegations of illegal betting earlier this month.

A statement from the Italian FA revealed that the Federal Prosecutor’s Office had reached an agreement with Tonali, resulting in an 18-month sanction.

This penalty includes a 10-month ban from football and an additional eight months aimed at assisting Tonali’s recovery from gambling addiction.

The rehabilitation period will involve a series of at least 16 public appearances in Italy at amateur sports associations and ‘federal territorial centers.’

In addition to the ban, Tonali has been fined £17,380 for violating FIGC rules that prohibit players from placing bets on football events organized by FIGC, UEFA, and FIFA.

Despite the looming suspension, Tonali has received praise from Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe for his professionalism and performance on the pitch.

Tonali recently featured against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, impressing fans and his coach.

“I think you saw from the Dortmund game he came on and did really well. He was bright. That’s how he’s trained,” said Howe.

“From the moment this happened, I think his training performances have been very good. His mood is the same, he’s good around the group, good around the training ground.”

While the ban remains in the background, Tonali will still be allowed to participate in training and behind-closed-doors games with Newcastle.

However, if Italy qualifies for the Euros, he will be ineligible for participation in the tournament.

The ban serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of illegal gambling for professional athletes and the importance of addressing addiction issues within the sports community.

Tonali now faces a challenging period of rehabilitation and reflection while Newcastle United navigates the implications of his suspension.
