Manchester City advanced to the round of eight by eliminating the defending champion Liverpool in an exciting 3-2 victory at the Etihad.

Goals from Fabio Carvalho and Mohamed Salah weren’t enough to prevent the Reds from a 3-2 defeat at the Etihad in their fourth round clash on Thursday.

The outcome put a stop to City’s five-match losing streak against Liverpool, who they had already fallen to in the Community Shield and Premier League this year.

In less than ten minutes, Erling Haaland found the back of the net, but Nathan Ake ultimately scored the game-winning goal off a stunning Kevin De Bruyne cross.

The quarterfinals are scheduled to take place on January 9–10.

Manchester City were drawn to face Southampton at St. Mary’s.

The other three ties are:

Manchester United vs Charlton

Wolves vs Nottingham Forest

Newcastle vs Leicester.

Guardiola praised his team’s performance while outlining the challenges of playing Jurgen Klopp’s side after the game.

“We cannot say it was not a good game,” said Guardiola.

“Liverpool and City again respect what they have done in the last years. The last games between each other weren’t successful for us, but we played the game we should play.”

“It’s not easy to keep the ball against them as they have a defensive structure that is the most difficult I have faced in my career.”

“I had the feeling that we were very good at everything but they (Liverpool) don’t need anything to score or create chances with the quality and structure they have.”

“When they are much better they destroy you. It’s impossible to be better for 90 minutes than them but I think today we played a really, really good game against them.”

“Kevin sometimes just has to find the right fire inside himself, to be a little bit grumpy or upset to play his best,” he added. “He has to be provoked to get the energy inside him, and wonders happen. What a player.”

Jurgen Klopp reaction after his side’s loss to Man City

“Good for half-time, all ok. Second half starts and they score second goal with first shot. It was world class from Riyad but we could have done more before that.”

“The goals we conceded were all unnecessary. When you see the third goal, we changed before and that meant new organisation. We watched the ball. We all expect Nathan to win that header, but behind that is nobody apart from two City players.”

“The goals were unnecessary, the rest was a difficult game for both teams. We had good spells, played good football and could have score more goals. It;s a result we have to live with, that’s it.”

Klopp on James Milner:

“Millie is only a little thing, he felt something and we wanted to make sure it’s not getting worse. It’s maybe a hamstring, I don’t know.”

Klopp on Liverpool injuries:

“Trent was ill, just like Oxlade-Chamberlain was il is back with us now and Konate will be back next week.”
