The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced the shutdown of the Bonsa Headworks treatment plant in Tarkwa, citing severe pollution caused by illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as galamsey.
In a statement issued by the company, GWCL disclosed that the closure became inevitable due to the extensive damage caused by galamsey operations along the Bonsa River. The polluted water has rendered it nearly impossible to extract and treat for safe consumption.
“We regret to inform the public that the Bonsa Headworks, responsible for producing 75% of potable water supplied to Tarkwa Township and its surrounding areas, has been shut down due to massive galamsey activities on the Bonsa River,” the statement read.
This decision will undoubtedly impact residents and businesses that rely heavily on the facility for their water needs. GWCL has called on authorities and stakeholders to address the growing menace of illegal mining, which continues to pose significant threats to water resources and public health in the region.
Residents are being urged to conserve water and explore alternative sources as the situation persists. The GWCL assured the public of ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis and restore water supply as soon as conditions improve.
