Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has come under fire from Joyce Bawah Mogtari, a special assistant to former President John Mahama, for disseminating lies.

She said that Dr. Bawumia is a professional liar and that Ghana deserves an honest president.

Her remarks followed Dr. Bawumia’s announcement that the nursing trainee allowances would be paid out after the Ministry of Finance approved GH¢177 million.

Following his confirmation with the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Bawumia, the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), gave student nurses in the Bono Region the assurance that their allowances will be disbursed.

A student nurse questioned Dr. Bawumia regarding the past-due allowances at a meeting.

Dr. Bawumia pledged that the outstanding debt owing to trainees would be settled by Thursday, May 16, 2024, during a second meeting with nurses and midwives in Accra.

He said that the Ministry of Health had been given the go-ahead to receive the cash, and the Controller General had been authorised to do so.

Joyce Bawah Mogtari wrote on X (previously Twitter): “This is straight from the source! GH¢177 million that the Finance Ministry was instructed to release—where is it now? As we always advise, exercise caution when choosing whose battles to fight since occasionally, the people you fight the hardest may abandon you! Be careful what you wish! Dr. Bawumia has a history of lying! Ghana is worthy of more.

Despite Dr. Bawumia’s promises, the Ghana Nurses and Midwives Trainees Association (GNMTA) stated that its members had not yet received their allowances.

In an interview in Accra, Pascal Adombillah, the President of GNMTA, expressed his dissatisfaction with the delayed payments and pointed out that the Vice President’s promise to pay out around 13 months’ worth of arrears has not been kept.
