Liverpool has finally secured the services of the PSV Eindhoven forward, who will go to England for a medical “immediately” after the Reds reached an initial agreement on a £37 million contract that may rise £40 million with add-ons.

The 23-year-old right-footed winger, who typically plays on the left of a front three, has made 24 appearances for PSV this season and has an amazing 13 goals and 17 assists.

In 159 games for PSV, he has scored 55 goals and 50 assists overall.

On Monday night, PSV Director of Football Marcel Brands made the announcement, calling it “a record transfer for PSV.”

PSV tweeted the following:

“PSV and LFC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo.”

“The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer.”

Erik ten Hag was eager to sign his fellow countryman as it was thought that the Red Devils were planning to make a move for the 23-year-old in January after beginning negotiations with his agents last month.

Gakpo reportedly expressed disappointment about the collapse of his proposed summer transfer to Old Trafford and said he was eager to join United.

He said: “That was a tough period.”

“I learned from that. I’m going to do it differently. What comes, that comes.”

“I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I couldn’t remember. And I started to doubt. Leeds United did come. Should I go there?”

“Now I wait for everything. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. When they come, I’ll think about it. I also seek the help of God in these decisions.”

Liverpool have moved to overtake their competitors after sustained injuries to Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz, with Diaz unlikely to play a significant role again this season.

Gakpo’s arrival is reminiscent of Diaz’s last January, as the right-footed, in-form left winger joins the team following a standout first half of the season.

Virgil van Dijk, the captain of the Netherlands, who praised Gakpo at the World Cup, will unite with him at Anfield.

“Hopefully Cody can go to the moon and back, Van Dijk said.”

“What we see in training is what you see on the pitch. There is still so much potential and I hope he can carry on showing it for us. We are very happy with him.”

The key question is whether he can carry over his Eredivisie form into the Premier League.
