PThe 2022 World Cup Stadiums in Qatar have been revealed by Qatari officials as the country prepares to host the World Cup tournament for the first time ever. The tournament will take place across eight stadiums, one of which has been designed by famed British architect Zaha Hadid and another by Foster + Partners, known worldwide for their design of Apple’s new headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Six of the stadiums will have around half their seats taken up after the World Cup and a seventh will be dismantled, while the remaining stadium will be the only one used for a football team afterward.

In this very post, Townflex will be putting on display and educating you much on what you should know about the Qatar 2022 World Cup Stadiums to be used in the upcoming tournament which comes off in November/December 2022.

Here is all you need to know about the eight stadiums ahead of the World Cup

Qatar 2022 World Cup Stadiums

1. Ahmad bin Ali Stadium

Ahmad bin Ali Stadium popularly known as the Al-Rayyan Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar, It is currently used mostly for football matches and it is the home to Al-Rayyan Sports Club and Al-Kharitiyath Sports Club.

The former Ahmad bin Ali Stadium was demolished in 2015, reconstructed, and now is one of eight stadiums being converted for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.

Ahmed bin Ali Stadium is also known as Al Rayyan Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium that is located in Qatar. Due to its location on the edge of the desert, preserving nature has long been a priority in Al Rayyan – and this arena fits perfectly with the ethos of one of Qatar’s most traditional cities.

Every part of the stadium district has been designed with sustainability in mind. After the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ has come to a close, Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) plans to remove almost half of the stadium’s 40,000 modular seats and give them to football development projects abroad.

2. Al Bayt Stadium

Al-Bayt Stadium is a retractable roof football stadium in Al Khor, Qatar, also selected as one of the eight stadiums for the upcoming 2022 world cup tournament.

It is the second-largest stadium after Lusail Stadium, it was designed by Dar Al-Handasah, with a total of 60,000 seats.

Excess seats will be removed from the upper-tier and donated to other countries or placed on the infrastructures planned for the 2030 Asian Games. The vacated space will then be converted into a five-star hotel, shopping mall and other sports facilities.

The tent-like structure has four stands, each of whose exterior walls and peaked roofs are covered in polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) woven fiberglass membrane. The exterior part of the PTFE membrane is coloured in traditional black, white and red colours to further reference the Nomadic people’s tents. A retractable roof connects the four stands to enclose the stadium. A 2020 investigation by The Guardian revealed that over 6500 migrant workers from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka died between 2010 and 2020 during the construction of World Cup venues in Qatar.

3. AL JANOUB STADIUM

Al-Janoub Stadium, formerly known as Al-Wakrah Stadium  is a retractable roof football stadium in Al-Wakrah, Qatar that was inaugurated on 16 May 2019. This is the second among the eight stadiums for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, after the renovation of Khalifa International Stadium

It is Located in Al Wakrah, 18 kilometers away from Doha, this stadium has a capacity of 40,000, and is part of a broader sports complex that contains cycling and horse trails, shops, restaurants and sports clubs.

the area’s connection with the sea, having been formerly known as a pearling village, influenced the flowing design of the striking stadium’s exterior, which was developed in conjunction with the world-famous Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid together with the firm AECOM.

After the FIFA World Cup, the stadium’s capacity will be reduced to 20,000 seats, guaranteeing an electric atmosphere for their Qatar Stars League matches.

4. Al Thumama Stadium

Al Thumama Stadium is a distinct Arab architectural icon, as it is inspired by the traditional qahfiya (the cap worn under the Ghutra and Egal) in the Arab world. This design was chosen because it is a cultural commonality among Arabs in the Arab world. Therefore, it expresses the Arab civilization’s depth and the intertwined cultural-historical legacy of the Arab countries.

The stadium is located in the southern districts of Doha, several minutes away from Hamad International Airport, and has a capacity of at least 40,000 seats that will be reduced after the tournament to 20,000 and donated to developing countries.

This is a joint venture between Al Jaber Engineering of Qatar and Tekfen Construction of Turkey is significantly involved in the construction work. The architectural design, by the Chief Architect of Arab Engineering Bureau Ibrahim Jaidah. It takes its inspiration from the traditional taqiyah hat, a traditional cap which is worn by men and boys across the Middle East.

Following the World Cup, half of the stadium’s seats will be removed and will be donated to other countries.

5. Education City Stadium

The new Education City Stadium is located in the midst of several world-class university campuses at Qatar’s global center of excellence, Education City.

The stadium can seat up to 40,000 spectators, and it takes the form of a jagged diamond. It is easily accessible for fans by either road or metro.

For decades to come, Qatar Foundation Stadium will be a symbol of innovation, sustainability and progress, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the goals of both Qatar Foundation and the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy.

Though it will boast a 40,000 capacity during the FIFA World Cup™, Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) plans to donate 20,000 seats to build stadiums in developing countries.

6. Khalifa International Stadium

Al Rayyan’s much-loved Khalifa International Stadium is Qatar’s most historic football venue, having hosted the Asian Games, the Gulf Cup, the AFC Asian Cup and five matches of the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup, including the Final between Liverpool and Flamengo.

Built in 1976, a new chapter in the stadium’s storied past was written in 2017 when it reopened after renovation and hosted the final of the Emir Cup, where FIFA World Cup™ winner Xavi’s Al-Sadd triumphed.

The ultra-modern revamp, however, still honours the past with the stadium’s iconic dual arches continuing to sweep the skyline.

Attached to the stadium via a walkway is the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, adding to the appreciation of how this venue cherishes its past as it builds towards an exciting future.

7. Lusail Stadium

The Lusail Stadium is set to be a historic venue for a plethora of reasons. It will be the largest stadium by capacity at the first FIFA World Cup™ hosted in the Gulf, it will be the centrepiece of a brand new metropolis named Lusail City, and its legacy after the global finals will see the stadium’s infrastructure converted into a community space including schools, shops, cafés, sporting facilities and health clinics.To spread the legacy of Qatar 2022 around the world after the finals have concluded, Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) plans to remove and donate most of the stadium’s 80,000 seats to sporting projects across the globe.

With a design which alludes to the decorative motifs on bowls found across the Arab world, the Lusail Stadium will surely host up a feast of football for fans from across the planet in 2022.

8. Stadium 974

Stadium 974 formerly Ras Abu Aboud Stadium is a football stadium in Ras Abu Aboud, Doha, Qatar. Opened 30 November 2021, it is a temporary venue that will host matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, after which it will be deconstructed.

Al Thumama Stadium is a distinct Arab architectural icon, as it is inspired by the traditional qahfiya (the cap worn under the Ghutra and Egal) in the Arab world.
