Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has rejected a request from Majority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin to reconvene Parliament for an emergency session.
In a memo dated November 26, 2024, Bagbin explained that the timing of the request would disrupt the upcoming December 7 general elections and emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on the electoral process.
The Majority Leader had asked for a two-day session, scheduled for November 28 and 29, to address urgent government business.

However, Bagbin highlighted that the session would be insufficient to address the twenty-two items on the agenda.
He also noted that the parliamentary calendar had already accounted for the election campaign period, during which MPs engage with the electorate.
In the memo, Bagbin stated, “The national interest would better be served if members exhibit conduct of honour, empathy, and humility in the performance of their duties.”
He concluded that the request was “accordingly denied,” assuring that Parliament would reconvene after the elections to finalize all pending matters.
