Taylor Swift was officially named Artist of the Year at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, September 11.
The 34-year-old pop icon won against a strong group of artists that included the likes of Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Bad Bunny, Eminem, and SZA.
Swift’s victory was announced during a commercial break at the awards show, which was held at the UBS Arena in New York. The superstar let the 2024 edition of the awards with 12 nominations, mostly for her popular song “Fortnight,” which she collaborated on with Post Malone as part of her Tortured Poets Department project.
The black-and-white music video, which featured performances by Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles of Dead Poets Society, contributed greatly to her huge triumph this year.
Swift won several major awards at the 2024 VMAs, including Best Collaboration, Best Pop, Song of the Summer, Best Direction, and Best Editing, all thanks to her milestone year and the popularity of the “Fortnight” video.

The event began with Swift and Malone, 29, winning the Best Collaboration award together. On stage, Swift thanked Malone for his creative abilities and acknowledged the video’s production crew. “There is a very clear reason why Post Malone is everyone in music’s favorite person to collaborate with,” she stated. “It is because you are so ridiculously talented. You are so versatile, and you’re the most down-to-earth person.”
Malone, who was visibly moved, praised Swift, during his acceptance speech pointing out “the amount of work and care and love that she puts into everything she does.” Their mutual respect established an atmosphere for the rest of the evening.
Swift was cheerfully engaged in the crowd throughout the night, dancing to Karol G and Katy Perry performances. She was seen singing along to “Teenage Dream” with her friend Suki Waterhouse, and then enjoying Perry’s classics “E.T.” and “California Gurls.”
