Treat Williams dead: Actor, 71, dies in road accident

American Actor Treat Williams, who starred in the film musical Hair and the US television series Everwood, has been confirmed dead, he died in a road accident aged 71.

On Monday evening (June 12, 2023), the sad news of the actor’s passing was confirmed to PEOPLE by his agent, Barry McPherson, with whom he had a professional relationship spanning 15 years.

According to McPherson, the actor’s untimely demise occurred earlier that afternoon as a result of a fatal incident where another vehicle abruptly cut him off while he was making a turn.

Expressing profound grief, McPherson shared, “He was killed this afternoon. He was making a left or a right [and] a car cut him off,” McPherson says. “I’m just devastated. He was the nicest guy. He was so talented.”

“He was an actor’s actor. Filmmakers loved him. He’s been the heart of the Hollywood since the late 1970s,” McPherson continues. “He was really proud of his performance this year. He’s been so happy with the work that I got him. He’s had a balanced career.”

It is with great sadness that we report that our beloved Treat Williams has passed away tonight in Dorset, Vermont after a fatal motorcycle accident. As you can imagine, we are shocked and greatly bereaved at this time.

Treat was full of love for his family, for his life and for his craft, and was truly at the top of his game in all of it. It is all so shocking right now, but please know that Treat was dearly and deeply loved and respected by his family and everyone who knew him.

We are beyond devastated and ask that you respect our privacy as we deal with our grief. To all his fans, please know that Treat appreciated all of you and please continue to keep him in your hearts and prayers.

The crash occurred on Monday at approximately 5 p.m. along Route 30 near Dorset, Vermont, as reported by Jacob Gribble, the fire chief for Dorset.

Gribble specified that the incident involved a solitary vehicle and the motorcycle ridden by Williams. According to investigators, it is believed that the driver of the car was executing a turn and failed to notice the motorcycle approaching.

As a result, Williams sustained injuries in the collision, making him the sole individual harmed. In response, emergency services promptly called for a LifeNet helicopter to transport him to a hospital located in New York.

The Manchester Fire Department swiftly arrived at the scene and established a landing zone for the helicopter. Additional emergency services that responded to the incident included East Dorset Fire and Rupert Fire departments.

Later on Monday, the Vermont State Police issued a press release, confirming both Williams’ identity and providing further details regarding the crash.

The police have stated that the investigation is still in its early stages, and on Tuesday, June 13, the investigative team will return to the collision site to continue examining and processing the scene.

Williams attended Kent School in Connecticut and later went on to study theater at Franklin and Marshall College.

Treat Williams began his acting career in theater, where he honed his skills and gained recognition for his talent. In 1975, he made his film debut with a small role in the movie “The Ritz.”

However, it was his breakthrough role as Berger in the 1979 film adaptation of the musical “Hair” that catapulted him to wider recognition. Williams’ charismatic performance earned him critical acclaim and established him as a promising actor in Hollywood.
