Authorities in Tulsa, Oklahoma, have arrested a 42-year-old man accused of carrying out a violent and unprovoked attack on a woman riding a city bus, leaving her with life-threatening injuries.

Police identified the suspect as Robert J. Rhoades, who now faces one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of false impersonation. According to officials, Rhoades is also being held on a fugitive from justice warrant issued out of Missouri.

The incident unfolded around 1:09 p.m. on Sunday, when Tulsa police responded to reports of a stabbing at the main bus station in the 300 block of South Cheyenne Avenue.

Witnesses told officers they saw the suspect fleeing the scene on foot and “provided a direction of travel.” Officers patrolling nearby on bicycles quickly joined the search, eventually locating Rhoades a short distance away at 100 South Denver Avenue. He was taken into custody without resistance.

Investigators reported finding visible blood on Rhoades’ clothing, and a bloody knife was recovered from his pocket during a search.

Police revealed disturbing details of the attack in their official statement:

“Witnesses, including the bus driver, informed us that both Rhoades and the 43-year-old female victim boarded the bus at the Walmart stop on 81st and Lewis. Rhoades sat directly behind her, and they had no prior interactions or verbal exchanges. As the bus arrived at the main station, Rhoades reached around and allegedly assaulted the victim by slicing her throat before leaving the scene.”

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent emergency surgery. Doctors have since stabilized her condition and are “hopeful” she will make a full recovery.

Due to the severity of her injuries, detectives from the Tulsa Police Department’s Homicide Unit responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. Authorities are also reviewing security footage from inside the bus to gather additional evidence.

Rhoades remains in custody at the Tulsa County Jail without bond. At the time of publication, it is unclear when he will make his first court appearance.

This shocking act of violence has raised concerns about public transportation safety in Tulsa, with authorities urging residents to remain vigilant when using city buses and other public transit services.
