With Jurgen Klopp declaring that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, Virgil van Dijk has cast doubt over his future there.

“That’s a big question — I don’t know,” Van Dijk replied when asked if he envisioned himself staying with the team once Klopp left.

“The club will face a challenging task. It is widely recognised. There will be a lot of changes, including replacing not just the boss but also the departing employees.

“The club has a significant task ahead of it, and I’m interested to see where it will go. However, we’ll find out when that’s announced and assess our position. I’m limited in what I can say.”

Joining the Merseyside team in 2018, the Netherlands international has been a mainstay of the Klopp era, helping the team win the Premier League in 2020 and the Champions League in 2019—its first league title in thirty years.

He was elected club captain last summer after Jordan Henderson moved to Al Ittihad, and he also won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in 2022.

Van Dijk’s contract only lasts 18 months, just like that of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, but he has stated that his main goal is to give Klopp a trophy-filled farewell this season.

“Obviously it will be the end of Jurgen Klopp’s era,” he stated. “That I am still a part of it makes me very happy. I don’t like to talk about it because of this. I continue to participate in it.

“That is my primary concern, and the outcome of the season will be determined.” When we achieve the success that we all strive for and dream of, hopefully there will be greater clarity on the club’s future goals, and then we’ll see.”

Liverpool’s FA Cup victory over Norwich on Sunday, 5-2, maintains them in the running for four trophies this season. They will play Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on February 25. They are currently leading the Premier League, five points ahead of second-place Manchester City. They have not yet been revealed as their opponents in the Europa League round of 16.
