Video Shows ‘Dumsor’ Endangering Babies on Life Support at Tema General Hospital

A video of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Tema General Hospital has surfaced on social media amid the ongoing power outage that is plaguing the entire nation, highlighting the negative effects of the outage on healthcare services.

The footage, which GhanaWeb was able to view, depicts the ward completely darkened because there is no electricity at the institution.

Although the actual time of the video’s capture is unknown, background noise—possibly that of hospital employees—provided context.

At the Tema General Hospital, the lights are out. The CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) has been turned off for this infant. Although oxygen is available, there isn’t a flow metre to connect to it. “There’s a good chance we could lose a lot of babies if light doesn’t come on in a few minutes,” she said.

According to the personnel, up to ten babies in critical condition are among the unit’s full capacity.

The impact of the electricity crisis is shown in all its brutal reality in the video.

In the face of popular demands for a load-shedding schedule to ease consumers into the crisis, the Ghanaian Electricity Company and the Ministry of Energy are emphatic that there is no timeline for the issue.

In a recent interview, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister of Energy, urged individuals who were in need of a timeline to proceed with releasing their own if they were certain that dumsor existed.

Some opponents have called his remarks disrespectful to the hardship of Ghanaians.
