Why Russia attacked Ukraine

Why have Russian troops attacked and where have they assaulted?

The first targets were airports and military headquarters near cities across Ukraine, including Kyiv’s main Boryspil international airport.

Then, from neighboring Belarus in the north and Crimea in the south, tanks and infantry poured into Ukraine in the north-east, near Kharkiv, a city of 1.4 million people; and in the east, near Luhansk.

Russian troops landed in Ukraine’s major port cities of Odesa and Mariupol, as well as a vital airbase just outside Kyiv.

President Putin went on television moments before the invasion began, claiming that Russia could not feel “secure, develop, or exist” because of the “continuous threat” posed by contemporary Ukraine.

What is Putin’s goal?

President Putin cited Nato’s eastward expansion as a leading factor in his decision to attack Ukraine.

Previously, he had lamented that Russia had “nowhere else to go” and that “do they think we’ll just sit here idly by?”

Ukraine is seeking a clear timetable for joining Nato, and Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated, “It is absolutely vital for us to ensure Ukraine never, ever joins Nato.”

President Putin claims that contemporary Ukraine was totally built by communist Russia and that it is now a puppet state under Western influence.

President Putin has also said that if Ukraine joins Nato, the alliance will attempt to reclaim Crimea.

But Russia isn’t solely concerned in Ukraine.

It hereby calls for Nato to revert to its pre-1997 frontiers and leave Ukraine.

Furthermore, Mr. Putin wants Nato to withdraw its forces and military facilities from member states that joined the alliance after 1997.

Why Russia attacked Ukraine

As well as to refrain from deploying “strike weapons” near Russia’s borders.

That includes Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the Baltic States.

According to President Putin, the West promised in 1990 that Nato would not expand “one inch to the east,” but did so nevertheless.

However, Russia is concerned about more than just Ukraine. It proposes that Nato return to its pre-1997 borders.
