The action was described by Vladimir Putin as a “special military operation” to defend people in eastern Ukraine from “genocide,” a bogus assertion that the US had anticipated would be used as a justification for invasion and was roundly rejected by many Russians.

Tatyana Usmanova, a Moscow-based opposition activist, said she thought she was dreaming when she awoke at 5:30 a.m. to the news, which she described as “a shame.”

“I want to ask Ukrainians for forgiveness. We didn’t vote for those who unleashed the war,” she said.

As sirens blared in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, and enormous explosions were heard there and elsewhere, Russians signed open letters and online petitions asking that the Kremlin stop the attack, which the Ukrainian health minister said had killed at least 57 Ukrainians and injured many more.
