In a heartbreaking case that has brought to light serious concerns about patient care, a mother of four, Eilis Cronin Walsh, 49, died from internal bleeding after her hospital failed to communicate critical blood test results.
Eilis underwent surgery to remove her pancreas, gall bladder, and spleen at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin. Tragically, she lost over a liter of blood internally due to complications linked to the operation.
During a visit to the hospital on October 16, 2021, Eilis expressed her fears to her husband, James Walsh, saying, “I’m not going to make it.”
Despite her reassurances, she sensed something was terribly wrong. Just hours later, abnormal blood test results indicating a serious internal bleed went unnoticed by the medical team.
Although lab technicians made multiple attempts to alert the ward, their calls were unanswered.

The results, which could have prompted immediate intervention, were only reviewed seven hours later. By then, Eilis had collapsed from what would be a fatal rupture of an artery.
Dr. Donal Maguire, who oversaw Eilis’s care, stated that timely notification of the test results could have changed the outcome.
The coroner ruled the death as “medical misadventure,” emphasizing that it was an unintended consequence of medical treatment.
Eilis’s family expressed their grief outside the court, with her son, Kevin, saying, “I hope no other family has to go through this. Eilis was a wonderful mum and a great human being.”
