NEW YORK — Donald Trump transferred $5,625,005.48 to writer E. Jean Carroll’s legal team, according to recent court filings. The payment satisfies a civil court judgment for sexual abuse and defamation after years of legal challenges.
A federal judge ordered the immediate release of the funds on Wednesday after denying Trump’s final emergency request to delay the transaction.
Trump’s legal team tried a last-ditch effort last week to stop the money from being released. Lawyers filed a brief asking to freeze the payout while they asked the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider the case.
The federal court rejected that request and denied an emergency administrative stay. The denial forced the immediate multi-million dollar transfer, which includes the original $5 million jury award plus accumulated interest.
The financial penalty stems from a 2023 civil trial in Manhattan. A federal jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in a department store dressing room in 1996. The jury also found him liable for defaming her character in later social media posts.
Trump repeatedly appealed the verdict over the last three years but lost at every stage. This specific payment resolves the first of two major defamation judgments leveled against him by Carroll.
