Join Labour Strike, Face Dismissal: GIHOC Director Issues Warning

The Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries Limited, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, has issued a stern warning to employees regarding the upcoming strike organized by Labour groups, scheduled for October 10.

Jumah emphasized that any employee participating in the strike will face immediate dismissal.

Organised Labour plans to lay down its tools to protest the government’s perceived negligence in addressing the illegal mining crisis known as galamsey.

However, Jumah maintains that the issues prompting the strike are national concerns that do not directly impact GIHOC.

In an interview with Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM, Jumah voiced his opposition to the planned protest, stating that it contradicts the company’s policies.

If you like, don’t report to work. Anyone who joins them will be sacked. I am saying this on authority,” he declared.

He added that GIHOC employees should not involve themselves in actions that do not pertain to their work environment.

“Let the issue be a national concern, not GIHOC’s own,” he insisted, implying that the company should remain focused on its operations rather than external political issues.

He also cautioned against following the strike, describing it as a misguided decision.

In contrast, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has expressed solidarity with Organised Labour in its fight against illegal small-scale mining but announced it would not participate in the strike.

In a statement issued on October 8, GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour clarified that the association has not established a plan for industrial action, urging all members to continue providing full medical services without interruption.

The contrasting responses from GIHOC and GMA illustrate the divisions within Ghana’s workforce as concerns over galamsey continue to escalate.

As the strike date approaches, tensions remain high regarding the government’s handling of illegal mining activities and their environmental impact.
