In a world that can feel uncertain at times, the thought of finding the safest countries is quite appealing.
Whether you’re thinking about a vacation, a big move, or just curious, safety is something we all care about. Thankfully, the Global Peace Index is here to help.
What Is Global Peace Index?
The Global Peace Index, or GPI, is a tool created by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) that tells us which countries are the most peaceful. This report gives us a lot of data and insights about peace, its economic benefits, and how to create peaceful societies.
The GPI ranks 163 different countries and territories, which together make up almost all of the world’s population. Over the past ten years, this index has shown an increase in global violence and a decrease in peace.
The index was first introduced in May 2009 and has been updated annually since then. In 2015, it included 165 countries, up from 121 in 2007.
Iceland consistently holds the title of the most peaceful country in the world since 2008. It shares the top spot with countries like Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, and Austria.
On the flip side, Afghanistan has the unfortunate distinction of being the least peaceful country for eight years in a row. It’s followed by Yemen, Syria, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
These countries have consistently ranked among the most peaceful or least peaceful, showing how hard it can be to change their positions on the index.
Now, let’s dive into the safest countries in 2023 according to this index.
