After a six-week break, Premier League football is back, and the upcoming week will be filled with plenty of matchups.

Similar to other leagues across the world, the English top flight took a break in mid-November to make room for the inaugural winter World Cup.

Furthermore, there are a lot of stakes for teams at both ends of the table.

Arsenal, who are currently in first place in the league, will welcome West Ham to the Emirates.

Second place Man City might be EIGHT points behind the Gunners before playing Leeds at Elland Road on Wednesday night.

On Boxing Day, the third, fourth, sixth, and eighth-placed teams in the Champions League standings—Tottenham, Newcastle, Liverpool, and Chelsea will take on, respectively, Brentford, Leicester City, Aston Villa, and Bournemouth.

Fifth-placed Manchester United will host Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, Man United will try to get closer to Spurs with a victory.

Forest is now 18th place in the league with 13 points after 15 games, but they are far from out of the picture.

One of the most important Boxing Day matches in the fight against the drop is the Toffees’ game against Wolves.

It’s actually kind of like a classic six-pointer for relegation.

Currently, the 14 points held by Frank Lampard’s team are the only ones above the drop zone.

With just ten points, Wolves are at the very bottom of the standings.

The Black County club could suffer a severe psychological blow if they lose to Everton.

If struggling rival Southampton succeeds with a victory over Brighton, the Saints who are two points clear of Wolves, would revive their chances of making it out of the bottom three.

It’s appropriate that there is so much riding on the Premier League’s opening games after its first-ever World Cup-imposed break.

There will undoubtedly be plenty of pantomime thrills and spills for football fans around the nation to enjoy and lament, if history is any indication.
