In a shocking turn of events, a Google software engineer, Liren Chen, has been charged with the murder of his wife, Xuanyi Yu, in Santa Clara, California.
The 27-year-old Chen is accused of beating his wife to death in their home, leading to a gruesome scene discovered by the police.
The Santa Clara police found Chen standing in the bedroom with his wife’s lifeless body behind him on the floor.
Xuanyi Yu had severe blunt force injuries to her head, and Chen’s right hand was described as “extremely swollen and purple.”
Blood on Chen’s clothing, arms, legs, and hands, along with scratches on his arm, raised further suspicions.
The authorities were alerted to the incident by an acquaintance of Liren Chen, who made a 911 call on January 16 around 11 am (local time).
The caller expressed concern about Chen and his wife, both of whom were Google engineers. Chen was reportedly unresponsive to phone calls and door knocks, prompting the acquaintance to contact the police.
Upon arrival, officers found Chen inside his home in a seemingly motionless state on his knees with his hands in the air, staring blankly.
The arrest was delayed as Chen remains hospitalized, with his arraignment scheduled for January 22.
District Attorney Jeff Rosen emphasized the seriousness of domestic violence, urging those who feel abused or know someone facing abuse to reach out to law enforcement.
He stated, “Domestic violence deaths have been falling in our county, but that does not measure the depth and destructiveness of the violence.”
Google, in response to the tragedy, expressed shock and deep sadness. Google spokesperson Bailey Tomson stated, “We are shocked and deeply saddened by what has happened to Xuanyi.
Our thoughts are with her family at this time, and we will work to provide support to them and to co-workers who are processing this tragic news.”
Both Liren Chen and Xuanyi Yu had studied at China’s Tsinghua University and the University of California, San Diego, according to their LinkedIn pages.
