The sentence was handed down by the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Tuesday after Sakiru pleaded guilty to two charges: attempted sexual assault by penetration and indecent treatment of a child.

In his ruling, Justice Rahman Oshodi expressed strong condemnation of the teacher’s actions, pointing out the significant breach of trust.

Sakiru had been trusted by the girl’s parents to teach and guide their child in the Islamic school, a trust that he severely violated by attempting to assault her.

Justice Oshodi noted that individuals like Sakiru, who hold respected roles as religious leaders and teachers, must be held to a higher standard, and their misconduct must be met with severe consequences.

The court heard that Sakiru subjected the 13-year-old to inappropriate touching and tried to force himself on her. When confronted about his actions, he claimed it was the work of the devil.

Justice Oshodi rejected this defense, asserting that the law must reflect society’s condemnation of such offenses.

Sakiru was sentenced to 14 years for the attempted sexual assault and an additional seven years for indecent treatment of a child.

The sentences will run consecutively, and the court also ordered that Sakiru’s name be added to the Lagos State Sexual Offences Register.

During the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence from the victim and her father. Sakiru had initially pleaded not guilty but later opted for a plea bargain, which led to the amended charges.

The offenses occurred between February and March 2022 in the Mushin area of Lagos.
