Trump Job Approval Drops to 33% as Midterm Elections Approach

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s public support dropped to a new low this week, as rising voter anxiety over the war in Iran and everyday living costs continues to weigh down his numbers ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

Only 33 percent of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing as president, according to an Economist/YouGov survey released Monday. Another 62 percent of voters said they disapprove of his performance.

As it stands now, about 79 percent of Republicans approve of the president’s job performance, compared to just 4 percent of Democrats.

The latest figures follow a broader slide across multiple major national polls. A Reuters/Ipsos survey released last week put Trump’s support at 35 percent. A Quinnipiac University poll conducted at the end of July recorded his approval rating at 32 percent.

The Economist’s tracking data previously noted that Trump hit his lowest net approval rating on record in June, dropping to negative 25 percentage points.

Voters gave mixed marks when asked about specific policy areas. Four in 10 respondents favored his handling of immigration issues. However, only 30 percent said they trusted him to “deal wisely with an international crisis.”

Age also remains a point of debate among voters. Fifty-three percent of all respondents said Trump was “too old” for the office. That view was held by 85 percent of Democrats and 17 percent of Republicans surveyed.

The polling dip comes as Republican leaders work to protect their majorities in the House and Senate this November. Party strategists have warned that ongoing voter frustration over foreign conflict and rising costs could jeopardize GOP seats.

The White House pushed back against the survey results on Wednesday.

“No other President in history has accomplished more for hardworking Americans than President Trump, who is working tirelessly to create jobs, cool inflation, increase housing affordability, and more,” White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said in a statement.

Ingle added that “The President has already made historic progress not only in America but around the world, and this is just the beginning as his agenda continues taking effect.”

The Economist/YouGov poll questioned 1,589 respondents between Aug. 7 and Aug. 10. The survey carries a margin of error of roughly 3.2 percentage points.
