In a swift move following his inauguration on Monday, January 20, President Donald Trump’s administration shut down a mobile app designed to help migrants schedule appointments at U.S.-Mexico border ports of entry.

The app, known as CBP One, had been central to the previous administration’s strategy of facilitating legal entry for migrants seeking asylum.

By disabling the CBP One app just minutes after Trump assumed office, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials effectively canceled all pending appointments made by migrants without visas who were hoping to enter the U.S. through authorized entry points.

This decision is part of the Trump administration’s broader strategy to impose stricter measures at the border, despite a marked reduction in migration in recent months.

In December, CBP data revealed that 96,048 foreign nationals were encountered at the border. Of those, nearly half (48,722) sought formal admission at legal ports of entry.

While the numbers represent a decline compared to earlier months, the administration’s decision to shut down the app highlights its intention to reverse policies set by the previous administration, which had aimed to create clearer, more regulated pathways for migrants.

The CBP One app had been a cornerstone of the Biden administration’s border management plan, designed to streamline the asylum process and direct migrants toward legal avenues.

However, Trump’s administration seems focused on returning to more restrictive policies, with plans to reinstate the Migrant Protection Protocols (also known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy), which required tens of thousands of migrants to wait in Mexico while their U.S. asylum cases were processed.

As part of his first day in office, Trump also signed several executive orders addressing border security and immigration, signaling a shift back toward the harder stance on immigration that characterized his earlier tenure.
