Three Ghanaian universities have been banned by the Nigerian federal government over stated infractions.
The three are the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana; Cape Coast University, Ghana and privately run Volta University College, Ho.
The government took action by banning a total of 18 foreign universities operating in Nigeria, categorizing them as “degree mills” and cautioning against enrollment in such institutions. This directive affected universities from the United States, the United Kingdom, and others in the subregion, particularly in Togo and Benin.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) conveyed the ban through a statement on its website, highlighting that the Federal Government had not granted licenses to these universities, resulting in their closure.
The NUC emphasized the violation of the Education (National Minimum Standards, etc.) Act of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
This decision follows investigative journalism exposing universities in Benin and Togo offering degrees within six weeks in a corrupt process.
A report from Daily Nigerian uncovered a certificate racketeering syndicate in these neighboring countries, selling university degrees to Nigerian buyers.
An undercover reporter obtained a degree from Cotonou in six weeks at an “affordable rate,” with the certificate bearing the scan code of Ecole Superieure de Gestion et de Technologies, ESGT, Benin Republic, stating that the program started in 2018 and concluded on September 5, 2022.
