Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is a “dictator” who will be facing “huge” Western sanctions for invading Ukraine.

After calling Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky just after Russian soldiers pushed in, Johnson delivered a televised speech to the nation

“The UK will continue to support Ukraine because our greatest fears have now come true. And all our warnings have proven tragically accurate.”

Johnson emphasized that the West would negotiate a hefty package of economic penalties tailored in time to damage the Russian economy.

“And to that end we must also collectively cease the dependence on Russian oil and gas that for too long has given Putin his grip on Western politics,” he added.

He continued saying that: “Diplomatically, politically, economically — and eventually, militarily — this hideous and barbaric venture of Vladimir Putin must end in failure.”

To say the least, Johnson was particularly forthright and straightforward in pointing out Putin’s personal participation in bringing war back to Europe, describing it as “an attack on democracy and freedom in east Europe and around the world.”

In addition, the minister pointed out that the “flame of freedom” would return to Ukraine in due course.

“Because, despite all of his bombs, tanks, and missiles, I don’t believe the Russian dictator will ever be able to subjugate the Ukrainian people’s patriotic feelings and their fervent desire that their country should be free,” he added.

In response to the Russian invasion, Johnson called a conference of his security chiefs early in the morning in order address parliament at 5:00 p.m. (1700 GMT).

Meanwhile, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced that the UK Civil Aviation Authority has been asked to ensure that airlines avoid Ukraine airspace “to keep passengers and crew safe.”

Sanctions Imposed

The United Kingdom imposed sanctions on five Russian banks and three billionaires on Tuesday, in what Johnson described as the “first barrage” of sanctions in reaction to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, leading members of Johnson’s ruling Conservatives and the main opposition Labour Party have pushed him to hammer the Kremlin with the additional sanctions as hard as possible.

Also, foreign Office Minister James Cleverly promised that London would take “unprecedented” measures to “punish this aggression.”

He stated that “those measures will be implemented today and in the following days to truly block Russia from supporting this invasion.”

“The sanctions package that will be put in response to this is already actually having an effect,” Cleverly added, citing historic drops in the Russian stock market on Thursday as well as a drop in the ruble’s value.
