The Bank of Ghana has issued a statement to refute rumors that the institution has prohibited local banks from opening new Dollar accounts for people.

It should be recalled that just a few days earlier, there were rumors circulating that the Bank of Ghana had issued an official statement explaining the steps it had taken to stop the wild collapse of the Cedi, but that this specific move had been omitted from the statement..

According to the release, reports claimed the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has in a last-ditch desperate measure halted local banks from opening of new dollar accounts for customers (individuals and even additional account for businesses) without written express permission from the Central Bank.

The central banks have, however, denied these accusations, claiming that they are untrue and that they have not instructed banks to stop opening foreign currency accounts for consumers.

Speaking to 3news.com a source said; “No such decision has been taken by the Bank of Ghana,” the source again added “Such reports are fake.”

Bank of Ghana publicly reacting to the news took to their social media handles and called such reports fake as they shared posts from some popular blog sites that reported on the news.

“Public Notice: Bank of Ghana has not issued any directive to local banks to stop the opening of new dollar accounts.”
