Benzema and Putellas wins Ballon d’Or, Courtois wins Yashin Trophy

Real Madrid and French striker Karim Benzema received the Ballon d’Or award on Monday at a ceremony in Paris.

His outstanding performances during the previous season helped Real Madrid win the Champions League and La Liga.

The French forward won La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Spanish Super Cup.

After scoring 44 goals in 46 games for his club, including 15 in the Champions League, Benzema was named the best scorer in the Champions League, La Liga, and the UEFA Player of the Year.

Karim Benzema is the first Frenchman to win the Ballon d’Or in 24 years, and the fifth Frenchman overall.

Zinedine Zidane hands awards to Benzema

The award was given to Benzema on Monday night by legendary Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane, the last French winner from 1998.

Alexia Putellas of Spain won the women’s Ballon d’Or on Monday for the second year in a row. She received the honor following a season in which she led all scorers as her club Barcelona advanced to the Champions League final.

In order to win the prize in a season in which Barcelona also won the domestic league and cup double, the 28-year-old Putellas had to defeat difficult competitors, including three players from the England side that won the European Championship.

The award, given in a celebrity-studded ceremony at the Chatelet Theatre in the heart of Paris, is a solace for Putellas, who is presently recovering from a serious knee injury.

Thibaut Courtois was awarded the 2022 Yashin Trophy as the best goalkeeper of the 2021/22 season.

The honor comes a day after El Clasico game which saw Real Madrid beat Barcelona 3-1 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Despite competing against outstanding goalkeepers like Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Alisson, Ederson, and Jan Oblak, he was able to take home the award for greatest shot-stopper globally.

Kopa Trophy award was awarded to Barcelona’s youngster Gavi while his club teammate Robert Lewandowski also picked up the Gerd Muller Trophy.

Premier League Champions, Manchester City won the Club of the Year.
