Albert Kan Dapaah, the National Security Minister, has taken legal action against Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the convener of the #FixTheCountry Movement, in response to allegations made by Barker-Vormawor who claimed that National Security and other government officials attempted to bribe him to silence his activism.
This legal action by Kan Dapaah follows Barker-Vormawor’s recent interaction with the media after he and other activists were released following their arrest by the police on September 22 for organizing a demonstration in Accra in violation of a restraining order obtained by the police.
During his media interaction, Barker alleged that in 2021, National Security and other government officials approached him with an offer of money to quell his activism.
He stated that he was offered a substantial sum of $1 million and enticing government positions to cease his activities, which were perceived as detrimental to the government’s reputation. He claimed to possess evidence supporting his allegations but had not yet made it public.
These allegations made by Oliver Barker-Vormawor did not sit well with Albert Kan Dapaah, prompting him to file a lawsuit against Barker.
In his legal suit, Kan Dapaah seeks various remedies, including a declaration from the court that the statements made by Barker-Vormawor are defamatory.
Furthermore, Kan Dapaah demands the “recovery of the sum of Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GHC10,000,000.00) as General Damages, including Aggravated and/or Exemplary Damages for Defamation for the words uttered by the Defendant.”
Additionally, he calls for an apology and retraction of the statements in question and requests “a perpetual injunction restraining the Defendant from repeating similar or other defamatory words against the Plaintiff.”
