Nigerian afrobeat singer, Davido, has revealed that his father, Chief Adedeji Adeleke, sent policemen to arrest him several times during the beginning of his music career.

According to the musician, his father was against his decision to pursue a music career and always insisted that he focus on his education instead.

During an interview on Hot 97FM in New York, Davido recounted how his father would have him arrested whenever he was billed to perform at an event.

The arrests would also extend to event organizers and promoters. Davido mentioned that he only realized he was popular while in police custody after a police officer’s phone rang and his song played as the ringtone.

Davido believes his father’s actions were motivated by his desire for him to prioritize his education.

However, the musician chose to pursue his passion for music, despite his father’s objections.

In the interview, Davido also revealed that his father is now his biggest fan and supporter.

He acknowledged that his father’s initial opposition to his music career was driven by his desire for him to take his education seriously.

The experience highlights the challenges that young people in Nigeria face when they choose to pursue non-traditional careers.

Many parents in Nigeria place a high value on education and may not see the potential in creative industries such as music and entertainment.

Davido’s story is a testament to the importance of perseverance and the pursuit of one’s dreams, even in the face of opposition.
