ASEM: The cost of pork rises by 20%

Even our favorite pork (ie the fried one), known locally as domedo, has been impacted by the wind of suffering blowing across the entire nation.

Yeah, this comes after the Pig Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) announced that starting on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, pork retail prices will increase by 15% to 30%.

With the price increase, a live pig will now be sold for GH18 per kilogram, while the corpse will cost GH28.

According to Kwame Appiah Danquah, National President of the PFAG, the rise is the result of rising feed prices.

He said that the current rates of GH15 and GH23 for live weight and carcass, respectively, set in May 2022, had remained stable despite rises in the cost of feed and other agricultural inputs.

Mr. Danquah told the media over the phone that starting in 2021, the price hike will cover increases in the cost of production inputs.

“If you go to the farm and a pig is 100kilogrammes it means it would cost you 1,800cedis from next week,” he iterated.

“In May we did a price increase of 15 and 23 cedis and we have increased it by 20% which brings it to 18cedis for the live weight and 28cedis for the carcass”.

According to him, the cost of feeds like soy and wheat bran has grown by more than 100% this year, driving several PFAG members out of business.

“Wheat bran that we were buying at 16 cedis is now 46 cedis and soya which we were buying at 160 cedis is now 340 cedis, so this increase is not going to give us profit but rather it is going to keep us in business.

“You can’t say we are taking undue advantage of the customer because we are making losses and losing our businesses at this rate”.
