Russians will begin to question the justification for the conflict in Ukraine as a result of Moscow’s “strategic failure” in the city of Kherson, according to British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace on Saturday.

Following President Vladimir Putin’s order to send Russian soldiers into Ukraine on February 24, Kherson was the first significant urban center to collapse.

“Russia’s announced withdrawal from Kherson marks another strategic failure for them. In February, Russia failed to take any of its major objectives except Kherson,” Mr Wallace said in a statement.

“Now that that has also been given up, ordinary Russians must undoubtedly wonder: “What was it all for?””

As freed citizens chanted the Ukrainian national song in Kherson’s central square, the United States praised Ukraine’s retaking of the Black Sea port city as a “extraordinary victory.”

Wallace claimed that the invasion had “only achieved international isolationism and humiliation” when Russia withdrew its forces from Kherson and took up defensive positions on the east bank of the Dnipro River.

“The UK and the international community will continue to support them (Ukraine), and while the withdrawal is welcome, no one is going to underestimate the continuing threat posed by the Russian Federation.”
