The recent Bonds, Loans and ESG Capital Markets Africa Awards 2024 ceremony saw the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) dominate, clinching six awards at the event held in South Africa.
At the ceremony, which coincided with a conference on March 6th, Afreximbank was lauded for its significant contributions to trade financing and sustainable economic growth in Africa.
Among the accolades, Afreximbank was honored for its role as Joint Lead Manager in the issuance of a USD 300 million senior Eurobond by Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) in April 2023, marking a milestone as the first Investment Grade-rated commercial bank senior bond and the first international Eurobond out of Mauritius.

The Bank also received recognition for providing a USD 1.76 billion loan to the Government of Tanzania for infrastructure finance, a USD 640-million Samurai loan, and a EUR147-million loan to the Government of Cameroon for renewable energy projects.
Additionally, Afreximbank was commended for its USD 1.3-billion loan to Sonangol Finance Limited for oil and gas ventures and was named Financial Institution Debt House of the Year.
Chandi Mwenebungu, Director and Group Treasurer of Afreximbank, expressed gratitude for the awards, emphasizing the Bank’s strategic efforts in Africa’s financial markets and its commitment to promoting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards in financing structures.
Mwenebungu highlighted Afreximbank’s pivotal role in debt arranging across various industry sectors in Africa and its efforts to attract capital by integrating ESG principles.
