Akufo-Addo Launches Education Ministry’s ‘1 Student, 1 Tablet’ Initiative

The Education Ministry has started the “1 student, 1 tablet” campaign, spearheaded by President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, with the goal of improving secondary education in Ghana.

During the launch event held at the Accra International Conference Centre, the President revealed that the government has started implementing the initiative in senior high schools, as he mentioned in his State of the Nation Address.

He pointed out that it’s a tool meant to close the achievement gap between pupils from privileged and underprivileged backgrounds.

The president said, “Today I have the unique honour of formally launching yet another intervention to add further impetus to what I have already described as transformative policy that is broken miss and liberated mines, the Free Senior High School programme.

The president said that he introduced the Free Senior High School programme in 2017 because he believed that education is the key to ending poverty.

The Akufo-Addo administration launched the One-Student One-Tablet (1S1T) programme in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) classrooms across the country in February 2023 in an effort to transform education in Ghana.

Over 1.4 million students at government Senior High Schools will receive free tablets, according to plans announced by Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. Distribution is set to start in April. A key component of the Free Senior High School programme, which aims to improve the standard of instruction at public second-cycle schools, is this effort.

During the University of Ghana, Legon New Year School, Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emphasised the government’s commitment to digital transformation in education. He emphasised the nation’s senior high school pupils’ free delivery of smart tablets filled with required textbooks and practice exams. This programme represents a change in how technology is used to support education and prepare young people for success in the digital age.
